How many Bars can you talk about religion and politics in Seattle?
Well, I know one you can't. At least of Monday the 7th in Downtown Seattle. Near 4th and Olive a conversation of politics emerged from our group of 9 people and as I, like most at the table, responded with an opinion. I was approached by the bartender and told to end my participation on any conversation that involved politics or religion. No one else was asked this, Im sure it was implied. I However, was singled out and given the line at least 3 times in front of most the table. There were regular and non-regular patrons at our 2tables. They were watching this unfold.I was purely shocked. It was repeated to me and said to be a bar policy.I asked if i was being loud unruly or singled out, he replied no to them all. I have no understanding if this was or would be ok with the others of my party. I was very respectful, but declined to be lectured in the authoritarian theme of the bartenders tone and left promptly to pay my check. Said goodnight to everyone.
But its not over, As i paid my tip at the bar, being shocked & upset yet not making any scene signed my name on the tab and expressed my disatisfaction of their policy (in a non-vulgar way). The waitress blew up on me for being too confused by the whole scenario to tip her. She screamed at me further as the bartender repeated he wasn't asking me to leave. I was at this point telling them this was a MOST terrible experience - they did not understand my point i wasnt gonna argue. She had apparently bought us free drinks though all i had were 2 rum and cokes and a turkey sandwich and had no prior knowledge of why she would do this. I tipped her 17 dollars.
I left Fuming.
People choose when they excercise inalienable rights, the rights exist in us to be used at any time they do not expire. The whole time this was happening i was more shocked than anything and i was not being self righteous. The manner of treatment of my experience here was negative.If they Resort to Dismissing these inalienable rights especially when politics are so active in people or even passionate discourse of a civil and restrained volume then they should expect to lose business.
This particular bar has forever lost mine.

- As i thought about this it occured to me that i have some experience on the matter.
Having spent time in various workplaces, AS AN UNDERLING, you sometimes have to tell mgmt. About problems that deviate from there preconcieved notions. Possibly a diagram could be drawn up to plott their tolerance for such reminder and being rational i submit that they may allow it once or twice -possbily 3 times, but in excess of that- the above statement becomes very true. Such practicality can make this statement, for some, go from cliche to way of life.
